START A FOOD DIARY
If you want to improve your well-being and feel more in tune with your body, keeping a food diary is a good first step in the right direction. Especially if you regularly suffer from unwanted and unexplained physical symptoms such as nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, irritability and migraines, taking a look at what you eat on a daily basis can be an effective way to find out what might be causing it.
ELIMINATION DIET: DISCOVER TRIGGERING FOODS
Unlike true food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances to certain foods are far more common. It is estimated that around 20% of the world’s population struggle with an intolerance or sensitivity to a particular food. If you are suffering from symptoms that could be due to a food intolerance or sensitivity, the elimination diet can be a useful tool to discover the foods that are causing you discomfort. At 7DROPS, we advise you to be on the safe side and only do elimination diets under the guidance of a doctor or certified nutritionist.
IGG-MEDIATED INTOLERANCES
Food intolerances caused by the immune system can be tested by screening a patient’s blood for elevated levels of IgG antibodies towards certain foods. Common trigger foods include grains containing gluten, caffeine, processed meats, dried fruits, pickled foods, canned vegetables, and high-fructose foods (honey, agave nectar, watermelon, cherries, pears, apples, etc.)
WHAT IS A LACTOSE INTOLERANCE?
Some food intolerances are not triggered by IgG-antibodies, but by a lack of enzymes. The most prominent example for a food intolerance caused by a lack of enzymes is lactose intolerance. With age, a person’s intestines produce less lactase, the enzyme needed to process the type of sugar in dairy products. Research has found that only about 35% people worldwide can digest lactose well after the age of seven or eight. Typical lactose intolerance symptoms include flatulence and diarrhea.
