MILK ALLERGY & LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

You feel unwell after eating dairy products and don’t know the cause? Don’t worry, we’ll find out! A milk allergy is usually associated with an immune reaction to a specific protein, intolerance to milk is a sensitivity reaction of the immune system to components in animal milk. The most problematic milk allergens are the proteins most commonly found in milk, including caseins and the whey proteins alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin.

Allergy or intolerance?

First we need to clarify where the difference actually lies.
  • What is a milk allergy?

An allergy to milk or dairy products is caused by sensitisation of the immune system to proteins in animal milk. To test for this, your blood sample is tested for elevated IgE levels in various milk proteins (= allergens). A full list of allergens covered by 7DROPS can be found here.

The 7DROPS test examines milk allergens from 5 different animals:

    • Cow

    • Goat

    • Mare

    • Sheep

    • Camel

  • What is a milk intolerance?

Intolerance to milk is a sensitivity reaction of the immune system to components in animal milk. To test for this, your blood sample is tested for elevated IgG levels in various milk components (= antigens). A complete list of antigens covered by 7DROPS can be found here.

The 7DROPS test investigates intolerances to the following dairy products:

    • Buffalo milk

    • Buttermilk

    • Camel milk

    • Camembert

    • Cottage cheese

    • Cow’s milk

    • Emmental

    • Goat Cheese

    • Gouda

    • Mozzarella

    • Parmesan cheese

    • Sheep’s milk cheese

    • Sheep’s milk

  • Was ist eine Laktoseintoleranz?

Food intolerances are not always triggered by the immune system, but sometimes by a lack of enzymes. In lactose intolerance, the patient’s body does not produce enough enzymes called lactase. This enzyme is needed to break down the sugars in dairy products and digest them properly.

    • 35% of people worldwide cannot digest lactose well after the age of 7

    • Typical symptoms of lactose intolerance are bloating and diarrhoea

    • The 7DROPS test does NOT cover lactose intolerance

Expert opinion

"The 7DROPS allergy & food intolerance test is the best way to test for allergies and intolerances to milk and dairy products caused by the immune system. Even though the symptoms of IgG-based milk intolerances are often similar, lactose intolerance is not covered by the 7DROPS test."
