Allergic asthma in Europe
About 7 percent of all Europeans suffer from asthma. The most common type of asthma is allergic asthma, which affects approximately 60 percent of all asthma patients. Both have the same range of symptoms, for example coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
Know your triggers
This means that your asthma symptoms are caused by allergens triggering them. Managing asthma symptoms means learning to avoid your allergens. Common triggers include pollen, pet allergens (dander, urine, feces, saliva, hair), mold, dust mites, and household pests (cockroaches, mice).
The allergic march
Allergic diseases often begin in early life and progress over time. An infant might be suffering from atopic dermatitis (eczema), develop food allergies as a toddler, experience symptoms of hay fever as a young adolescent, and end up dealing with asthma as an adult. This natural progression of allergic diseases is called the allergic or atopic march.
Risk factor eczema
A study based on the US population has shown that eczema during childhood is a major risk factor for the development of allergic asthma. Approximately 70 percent of patients suffering from severe eczema develop asthma, as opposed to 20-30 percent of patients with only mild eczema and around 8 percent of the general population.
